ADC's Terminal Server is an intermediary unit, in a control system hierarchy, that provides for the multiplexing of many serial communication channels to a single Ethernet interface. It's typical application is to connect hundreds of remote data acquisition devices (ie PLCs, RTUs, flow computers, etc.), through several common communication channels, to a single "host" computer.
One unit services up to 10 serial channels. Unlike general-purpose Terminal Servers, this unit supports both synchronous and/or asynchronous channels, in either full and/or half-duplex modes, that implement either ASCII (ie terminal) or non-ASCII (binary encoded) communications.
Host application programs effect communications via simple file I/O to logical devices that are mapped to each physical port on the Terminal Server. An OS-specific kernel-level driver is employed at the host to create these logical connections. For example, a Unix host would use the "tty" interface, and have logical devices with names like "/dev/ttyi1a," "/dev/ttyi1b," etc. This approach allows familiar open, close, read, write, and ioctl commands to manage data I/O through the ports.
